How will you measure up?

Hello First Grade Families!

Just a little midweek post because the students decided they would like to give themselves homework.  Remember, homework is fun, so anytime you feel like taking some time to work on this with your family, then please bring in your findings to share in class!

Today's get together with the 8th grade was a study in measurement.  The form I set up included these pieces of information to fill out:

What is the object you are measuring?
What is your estimation?
What is the actual measurement?
What descriptive word can you use to explain which dimension you are measuring?

Prediction is a great skill to have.  We all use it in our day, but maybe don't even notice it. Most of us use some sort of logical reference to make our predictions as close to the number  needed. Today Peyton learned first hand that using your height as a reference can help you make a close estimation.  Her buddy told her that her height is 5'3" which helped her to reconsider her first estimation (6') of the horizontal pole going across the fence.  After discussing this, the two students were only off of the actual measurement by a half of an inch!

The students are beginning to make references that they can use in their own prediction. For this age, the students are grappling with these concepts:

What is an inch?  What is a foot?  How do these two relate?
What are the ways we abbreviate these measurement terms?
What are many possible vocab words that help you describe the measurement you are taking?

So, what's the homework?  After we came back together as a group, we discussed the measurements and found that some people got different results when they measured the same thing,  When our 8th grade buddies left, I asked the class if this made them think of including measurement in other work they do.  One of the ideas the students shared was that they wanted to measure things at home, like their dog, for instance!  So, get out there and measure.  And have fun!

Have a lovely night!  Love, Jennifer
